Kalama's is a beautiful, classic tropical feeling beach near Kailua Beach Park in Kailua with fine powdery white sand. Kalama's gentle waves make it a great beach for beginner surfers and body boarders, and you won't find the same crowds here as you will at Kalama's neighboring beach, Kailua.

Located among luxury homes in a neighborhood called Beachside, which is where President Obama has stayed for his Christmas vacation multiple times. The ocean is usually fairly calm, due to the protective nature of the bay setting, thus popular among families.

There is frequently some light wave action suitable for beginner surfers and bodyboarders. The backdrop is luxury Beachside homes. Similar pristine white sandy beach and turquoise ocean to Kailua Beach Park, though much more shallow waters close to shore and much less crowded. Also good to know: No lifeguard on duty. There are showers, restrooms and a lawn great for picnics.

Kite boarders like this place for the wind; and children often play inside the break. Plenty of shady spots offer an escape from the sun. It is possible to walk to Kalama from Kailua as they share the same stretch of sand. They also share a view of the Mokulua islands. There are no lifeguards, but the lovely park offers a picnic area, restrooms and showers.

Parking is available off Kalaheo Avenue and a cute little trail leads from the parking lot, past the bathrooms and showers where you can see native vegetation including large beach heliotrope trees, hau bush, beach naupaka and a coconut tree.

The beach front vegetation is mostly beach naupaka with a sprinkling of iron wood, beach heliotrope, coconut trees and hala. It definitely feels like you are on vacation when you are at Kalama's, you are away from the hustle and bustle of the city and no highrises are visable from the beach, even with the recent development boom that has made Kailua look more like California than Hawaii. Watch out for the Portugese Man-of-War (jellyfish) and stinging limu (seaweed) especially from June through September.

Kalama Beach Park is a 2 ½ mile stretch of immaculate white sand beach located within the area known as Kailua Beach—a popular spot for locals to enjoy the water as well as picnic and play outdoor sports.

This beautiful beach is located on O`ahu’s Windward coast and is tucked behind luxury mansions and many well landscaped estates. Kalama Beach Park is a 4 acre piece of land boasting white sand beaches with crystal clear, turquoise waters that people enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking in.

You’ll often find sunbathers laying out on the soft sand and many kite and windsurfers here because of the special combination of water currents, sea floor, and trade winds that come through this area.Translating to “the torch” in Hawaiian, this beach was named after Kamehameha III’s wife, Queen Kalama, who owned land in the area.

Nearby the beach, you’ll also find the former Boettcher Estate which was designed by Vladimir Ossipoff and landscaping was designed by Richard Tongg.

Upon the death of Mae Boettcher, the City & County purchased the estate in 2001. The City & County of Honolulu restored the estate and redesigned the building to serve as Kalama Beach Park.
